Is an ADHD Assessment Right for My Child?

If you’re unsure whether an ADHD assessment with RocketEd is the right next step, the information below can help you decide.

About the Child of Young Person (these must be ‘yes’ to proceed)

  • Is your child or young person between 8 and 19 years old?

  • Can they attend our rooms in Central London (EC1A) for a face-to-face assessment with our Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist?

  • Have you or others noticed ongoing difficulties with focus, attention, or regulation that affect daily life at home or school?

Core Characteristics of ADHD

The list below, based on guidance from the NHS and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), outlines the main areas where signs of ADHD may appear. ADHD can present in different ways - some children show mainly hyperactive and impulsive behaviours, others experience primarily inattentive symptoms such as daydreaming or losing focus, and many show a combination of both. Because of this, not every child will display difficulties in all areas, and the signs can vary greatly from one individual to another. That said, if you answer ‘Yes’ to some but not all of the questions below, an ADHD assessment may still be appropriate.

Attention and Concentration

  • Do they find it difficult to concentrate on tasks that require sustained mental effort, such as homework or reading?

  • Do they often make careless mistakes or struggle to pay attention to detail?

  • Do they find it hard to stay organised or complete tasks, even when motivated?

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

  • Do they find it difficult to sit still or remain seated when expected?

  • Do they talk excessively or interrupt others frequently?

  • Do they act before thinking, or find it hard to wait their turn?

Emotional Regulation and Daily Functioning

  • Do they experience strong emotions or frustration that can escalate quickly?

  • Do they appear easily distracted or overwhelmed by background noise or activity?

  • Do these difficulties occur across multiple settings (for example, both at home and school)?
