Michelle Furber
Specialist Dyslexia Assessor
BA (Hons) QTS, PG Cert SpLD (Dyslexia)
Michelle has over twenty years of teaching experience, with more than twelve years of specialist expertise in supporting learners with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Grounded in the belief that education should be inclusive, engaging and empowering, Michelle is passionate about helping students recognise their strengths and develop the confidence to thrive academically and personally.
After gaining her PGCE in Primary Education from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2003, Michelle began her career as a Key Stage 2 teacher in Brighton, where she developed a strong interest in supporting children with additional needs.
Since 2012, Michelle has worked as a Specialist English and Dyslexia Teacher, and more recently as a qualified Dyslexia Assessor. She provides comprehensive diagnostic assessments, creates tailored learning programmes, and works closely with teachers, parents and carers to ensure students receive effective support both in school and at home.
Michelle’s approach focuses on building confidence as well as academic skills. She delivers one-to-one and small-group interventions in phonics, reading and writing, helping children understand their own learning profiles and develop practical strategies for success. Alongside her direct work with pupils, Michelle also leads CPD training for staff, runs workshops for parents, and has introduced a range of school-based initiatives. These include a peer tutoring programme, where older pupils mentor younger ones in reading and maths, and projects designed to boost self-esteem and resilience in learners with dyslexia.
Michelle is based in Brighton. She completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) at the University of Brighton in 2017, followed by the Level 7 Diploma in Dyslexia: Assessment, Literacy, Support and Intervention through the British Dyslexia Association in 2024. She holds accreditation with the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA), Approved Practitioner Status (APC) with The Dyslexia Guild, and full membership of the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS).
